Faculty Presentation: Felix Blankenburg (Berlin)
In the first part of the talk, I will present some studies addressing conscious and unconscious somatosensory processing in the human brain (subliminal, masking and illusionary tactile processing). In the second part of the talk, limitations of these studies are shown and the motivation to study the interaction of diverse brain processes like attention, working memory and prediction are introduced in order to understand conscious perception in a more comprehensive way. Finally, the plan to establish a neurobiologically informed computational network model characterizing this interplay based on a series of fMRI and EEG/MEG experiments is presented. This network model will help to describe physiological and pathophysiological information processing in the human somatosensory system during various cognitive tasks in a novel hierarchical Bayesian framework.
