MisAttribution: Agency in Thought and Action

Workshop with Shaun Gallagher & Suzanne Anker, 16 July 2009

We will begin with a morning discussion focusing on the work of Shaun Gallagher, who has written extensively on the relation of the body to one’s sense of self and control over action.

The afternoon panel will widen the discussion to include the diverse perspectives of philosophy, art and neuroscience.
Some of the questions to consider are:
• What bodily processes underlie our sense of control over action?
• In what ways can that sense be disrupted by damage to the body?
• Is there any sense in which one cannot be mistaken about one’s self?
• What is the role of conscious thought in action?
• Must one know what one intends to do in order for it to be truly one’s own action?
• What role does evidence from neuroscience play in determining the ownership of action?

Please note: Seats for this workshop are limited. Please contact Paula Droege (pdroege@psu.de) to get a full program and reserve a place. Note whether you plan to attend all day, or just the morning or afternoon session.
